USPS Offers Early Retirements to Postmasters Impacted by POStPlan

The United States Postal Service is offering voluntary early retirements (VER) to postmasters impacted by POStPlan in advance of a reduction in force (RIF) in early 2015. POStPlan is an initiative by the USPS that is reducing hours at post offices across the nation and also replacing some postmasters with non-career or part time employees. Mailings of annuity estimates, VER packages and POStPlan memos will be accomplished by July 4th. The VER window period for eligible employees is from June 30th to August 18th. August 18th is the irrevocable date for the VER decision to retire. The VER effective date is September 30th, 2014. RIF notices will be issued October 15th with RIF separations effective January 9th, 2015. The Federal Times reports postmasters will receive $10,000 if they resign or take the VER option, payable on December 5th, 2014.
